Elon Musk actually tried to get the Thai Government to stop and publicly reverse a statement criticising his little sub while the kids were STILL TRAPPED IN THE CAVE.https://www.buzzfeed.com/ryanmac/unsworth-reply-elon-musk-fucking-idiot …

I have issue with that statement. While what Musk did might be wrong on many levels, the idea that people would stop helping those kids just because someone asked them to change their statement is ridiculous. The Thai government isn’t some tiny org. Lots of people work there.

Completely disagree. Biggest danger Musk posed was diverting government attention from competent people. That’s how governments screw up rescues. (Oh, he’s a billionaire, he must know something, he’ll invest in Thailand...) He diffused focus, the most precious thing in a rescue.

In that rescue of many miracles, perhaps the biggest miracle was how Vern got the Thai government to step aside in favor of a bunch of foreign cave rescuers. Remember they first sent in their divers and a Thai Navy seal died. He even emailed rescuers whose time was so valuable.

Yes I wasn’t disputing the facts, or even that Musk was a dick. I was trying to understand the argument that the entire government got distracted and hampered the rescue somehow.

He didn’t manage but posed that risk. If he had done what he did quietly, ran it by cave divers not on the ground and proceeded with that input—rather than tweeting about it day and night, contacting the Thai government, emailing the rescuers, even going there—no objections.

The problem and the threat was the narcissistic effort to grab publicity, not the useless gizmo. Heck, I’d have applauded the quiet effort even though it was obviously useless. You’d be surprised what an uphill battle it is to get officials to let the real experts do their job.

I follow now. Thanks for the clarification. I might be dense.

No issues! (Also that rescue. Wow. Nobody thought they’d get every kid out alive. I’m a diver, not a cave diver though, and I’d have given myself 50 percent odds of being rescued. They got a doctor cave rescuer on the site to anesthetize!! There aren’t two of them in the world).

They were amazing and it shows how the human spirit endures in the most challenging of circumstances.
