So if anybody thought yesterday was the end of it. There’s a giant impromptu march that just formed, and the protesters are waving people in, people are joining and it’s quickly growing. #HongKongProtestspic.twitter.com/egmwr2Yf2k

HongKongers can now sing their “anthem” fluently without missing a beat. They often put their hands over their hearts or hold five fingers up—for five demands, including universal suffrage. Some people are in tears. It’s the fourth month of practically non-stop protests.pic.twitter.com/phRfKSUycI

That flash rally ended at Admiralty. I got food and went back to the subway. A gaggle of youth at the entrance were empathetically waving, asking people to boycott the MTR, but not blocking. Maybe middle schoolers. It was the cutest picket line I ever saw. Anyway, I’m on a bus.

Apparently, I broke this thread. To preserve the continuity, I'm going to post the lost tweets here. (Imagine a tool that helped one use threads properly but asking for usability on Twitter is a lost cause).https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1179219111135633410 …

zeynep tufekciVerified account @zeynepA lot of good analyses of the scene where a Hong Kong police shot a teenager with a live round. But the real story is this set-up where increasingly desperate protesters only face police—rather than a political path—whether they march or fight that creates these situations.Show this thread1 reply 2 retweets 13 likesShow this thread -

zeynep tufekciVerified account @zeynepTerrible news. See upthread for the video of her being shot at by the Hong Kong police despite obvious lack of threat. (She was standing with a gaggle of journalist, no protesters among them, when the police just turned around and shot into them). https://twitter.com/jerometaylor/status/1179356794793189376 …Show this thread1 reply 1 retweet 7 likesShow this thread -

0:07zeynep tufekciVerified account @zeynepHong Kong protesters are marching down Sha Tsui Road—the neighborhood where the high-school teen was shot in the chest the night before. It’s a large and growing march. Heard a new slogan today, calling for the abolishment of Hong Kong’s police department. Palpable anger. pic.twitter.com/mFCj11IkQgShow this thread1 reply 1 retweet 7 likesShow this thread -

zeynep tufekci added,
zeynep tufekciVerified account @zeynepIt’s the second spontaneous rally in Hong Kong for me today. First was in the financial and upscale district. Well-dressed white collar workers (well, wearing the protest’s signature black) streamed out of work. This is a poorer neighborhood in the new territories. Same slogans.Show this thread1 reply 1 retweet 8 likesShow this thread -

Back to updates. Today, two more people imprisoned for their role in the Umbrella Movement in 2014 completed their prison sentences. That movement was completely peaceful and merely demanded universal suffrage. Ended with no concessions and jailed leaders.https://twitter.com/KongTsungGan/status/1179608235487068162 …

Kong Tsung-gan / 江松澗 @KongTsungGanVery good news: Shiu Ka-chun & Raphael Wong have been released from prison after serving their 8mo sentences for the#UmbrellaMovement. Now Chan Kin-man, serving 16mo, is the only UM prisoner left. Benny Tai is out on bail pending appeal of his sentence. https://news.rthk.hk/rthk/en/component/k2/1484004-20191003.htm …1 reply 15 retweets 25 likesShow this thread -

Today, HK authorities have bought one page one the leading Italian economic daily Il Sole 24 Ore to say "everything is fine". Is this happening elsewhere too?https://twitter.com/giuliopasserini/status/1179631420605640704 …

Yes! Some countries had that ad earlier. Interesting that they’re staggering the ads.
