Heh. Protesters are setting off small fireworks in line of sight of the Mong Kok police station (which is next to the Prince Edward MTR where there have been nightly protests since police closed down the station). And here comes the police line! (As I was typing).pic.twitter.com/MMNXxJWl3x

I got chased off the bench I was sitting! After 10 hours of walking and a lot of teargas, the sight of riot police charging in my direction doesn’t make me move that quickly. It’s all surreal here: a fire, raptors, a fruit stand still open. I bought some plums and sat back down.pic.twitter.com/Q3mx7c3FuZ

So after a lot of commotion, and charging, both the riot police and the raptors left. I have one plum left. And the joking or gallows humor aside, there isn’t enough police in the city to handle this many tenacious protesters. Hong Kong’s political problems are too big for this.

So, like many people in Hong Kong tonight, I was stuck on the wrong side of the water. Practically subway lines are shut down, roads blocked, taxis sparse. Some locals offered a ride. This isn’t unusual—there is a network of citizens ferrying protesters and press around.

After even some more walking, I’m back indoors! Thanks especially to all the Hong Kongers who have been very kind today, as I hung around and asked questions and walked with them. I hope the teenager who was shot at the chest by the police today recovers fully.

So what’s all this about? The Hong Kong protesters have five demands, but many of the ones I talk to say the most important one for them is universal suffrage. Hong Kongers want something seemingly as simple as electing their own government. https://twitter.com/fight4hongkong/status/1169193013173612545 …

This morning in Hong Kong, students are reported to have gathered outside the school of the high-school student shot yesterday in the chest by the police. Sending out the police to solve a political demand is, predictably, leading to a cycle of escalation.https://twitter.com/XinqiSu/status/1179181759675551744 …

A lot of good analyses of the scene where a Hong Kong police shot a teenager with a live round. But the real story is this set-up where increasingly desperate protesters only face police—rather than a political path—whether they march or fight that creates these situations.

Terrible news. See upthread for the video of her being shot at by the Hong Kong police despite obvious lack of threat. (She was standing with a gaggle of journalist, no protesters among them, when the police just turned around and shot into them).https://twitter.com/jerometaylor/status/1179356794793189376 …

Hong Kong protesters are marching down Sha Tsui Road—the neighborhood where the high-school teen was shot in the chest the night before. It’s a large and growing march. Heard a new slogan today, calling for the abolishment of Hong Kong’s police department. Palpable anger.pic.twitter.com/mFCj11IkQg

It’s the second spontaneous rally in Hong Kong for me today. First was in the financial and upscale district. Well-dressed white collar workers (well, wearing the protest’s signature black) streamed out of work. This is a poorer neighborhood in the new territories. Same slogans.

Good Luck, Stay Strong. I wish I could say that the American government could offer you its support but we are experiencing temporary technical difficulties in that regard. The people are with you.
