So after a lot of commotion, and charging, both the riot police and the raptors left. I have one plum left. And the joking or gallows humor aside, there isn’t enough police in the city to handle this many tenacious protesters. Hong Kong’s political problems are too big for this.

So, like many people in Hong Kong tonight, I was stuck on the wrong side of the water. Practically subway lines are shut down, roads blocked, taxis sparse. Some locals offered a ride. This isn’t unusual—there is a network of citizens ferrying protesters and press around.

After even some more walking, I’m back indoors! Thanks especially to all the Hong Kongers who have been very kind today, as I hung around and asked questions and walked with them. I hope the teenager who was shot at the chest by the police today recovers fully.

So what’s all this about? The Hong Kong protesters have five demands, but many of the ones I talk to say the most important one for them is universal suffrage. Hong Kongers want something seemingly as simple as electing their own government. https://twitter.com/fight4hongkong/status/1169193013173612545 …

This morning in Hong Kong, students are reported to have gathered outside the school of the high-school student shot yesterday in the chest by the police. Sending out the police to solve a political demand is, predictably, leading to a cycle of escalation.https://twitter.com/XinqiSu/status/1179181759675551744 …

The number announced as arrested yesterday in Hong Kong is now close to 200, and it appears many of these protesters (many of whom are very young) will be charged with "rioting" which carries a potential 10 year prison sentence.

youre smart, are you not at all concerned that a narrative that directly mirrors 1 to 1 an american imperial narrative might be suspect?

Why would millions of people marching for months demanding something as basic as right to vote require some foreign imperial hand? That theory is the opposite of smart.

me (naively): the media is clearly telling me the entire story of how my country is influencing hong kong, not at all! you (cynic): maybe i should question why the media is all so riled up and horny to present hong kong as the only global uprising worth talking about

Indonesia, Egypt, Iraq... The remedy is to talk about those, not dismiss a real, large and homegrown one in Hong Kong.
