Protesters started a fire in front of the Cheung Sha Wan Government Office. The firefighters came and put it out quickly. Like the medics, they are not impeded in their work. (They sometimes serve an intermediary function between the police and the protesters). #HongKongProtestspic.twitter.com/8xvqZJv7FO

Still a lot going on. I was trying to step away for a minute, ended up getting teargassed. Again. At this point I’m so used to it I just held my breath and walked away. A passerby caught in it asked me to wash his eyes. The city is basically awash in tear gas. #HongKongProtests

Heh. Protesters are setting off small fireworks in line of sight of the Mong Kok police station (which is next to the Prince Edward MTR where there have been nightly protests since police closed down the station). And here comes the police line! (As I was typing).pic.twitter.com/MMNXxJWl3x

I got chased off the bench I was sitting! After 10 hours of walking and a lot of teargas, the sight of riot police charging in my direction doesn’t make me move that quickly. It’s all surreal here: a fire, raptors, a fruit stand still open. I bought some plums and sat back down.pic.twitter.com/Q3mx7c3FuZ

So after a lot of commotion, and charging, both the riot police and the raptors left. I have one plum left. And the joking or gallows humor aside, there isn’t enough police in the city to handle this many tenacious protesters. Hong Kong’s political problems are too big for this.

So, like many people in Hong Kong tonight, I was stuck on the wrong side of the water. Practically subway lines are shut down, roads blocked, taxis sparse. Some locals offered a ride. This isn’t unusual—there is a network of citizens ferrying protesters and press around.

So what’s all this about? The Hong Kong protesters have five demands, but many of the ones I talk to say the most important one for them is universal suffrage. Hong Kongers want something seemingly as simple as electing their own government. https://twitter.com/fight4hongkong/status/1169193013173612545 …

All of the 96 protesters to be charged with ‘riot’ were arrested in Admiralty, mostly on suspicion of unlawful assembly and/or possession of offensive weapons. Since their arrest, a political decision has been made to charge many with ‘riot’.

That flash rally ended at Admiralty. I got food and went back to the subway. A gaggle of youth at the entrance were empathetically waving, asking people to boycott the MTR, but not blocking. Maybe middle schoolers. It was the cutest picket line I ever saw. Anyway, I’m on a bus.🤷‍♀️

A lot of good analyses of the scene where a Hong Kong police shot a teenager with a live round. But the real story is this set-up where increasingly desperate protesters only face police—rather than a political path—whether they march or fight that creates these situations.

Hong Kong may be planning to ban masks—exposing everyone including journalists to teargas. More importantly though, they may do this by invoking a very old colonial law to completely bypass legislative limits and authoritize anything they want. Lots of reports Hong Kong’s gov’t is mulling a ban on face masks, four months into huge public protests. Some thoughts. To do this, they’ll probably have to invoke a colonial-era law that was last used in 1967 during the leftist riots. If they take that route it’s a Big Deal

Few hours before the mask ban goes into effect in Hong Kong, thousands have gathered around the legislative council, the site of the Umbrella Movement five years ago. More arriving, many clearly coming straight from work, in office clothes. Ads have been altered accordingly. 😬pic.twitter.com/ZTuXmQW7dF

Another Hong Kong protester appears to have been shot. 😢 In the Hong Kong island side, it’s only firefighters operating so far, the police have stayed away. (Protesters do start fires but also clear the way for fire engines and applaud them).https://twitter.com/xinqisu/status/1180119820479520769 …

I spoke too soon! A line with 30 and riot police appeared near wan chai MTR. Literally within 30 seconds the crowd I was with—thousands—disappeared into the side streets. “Be watering”. A young woman came out of a restaurant there and yelled “triads” (gangsters) at them.pic.twitter.com/Faqt3B0xSQ

The police above were joined by another 100 riot police and maybe five raptors. But everyone here is long gone. The police are also leaving in the other direction. Hong Kong’s political crisis has been outsourced to the police and it’s not really working.

Hong Kong, the city that doesn’t need any step tracking apps. I end up walking 7 to 10 hours some days as transit shuts down routinely now. (August 31 was the turning point for that.) https://twitter.com/lwcalex/status/1180133651691868161 …

The attempt to overturn the mask ban in courts has failed. The law goes into effect now: a year in jail for wearing a mask. HK island protests largely dispersed via "be water" but Kowloon still active. (I left as I won't be interviewing under the conditions about to happen).

The mask ban has started. However, they don't really use facial recognition software here (though some protesters mention it as a potential future concern). The threat is about old-fashioned recognition (by humans!) and legal and personal consequences.https://twitter.com/derekbruff/status/1180195754591150080 …

My crypto course always features current events. Today, one of my students mentioned that Honk Kong officials have banned face masks during protests, presumably to enable facial recognition software. cc @hypervisible https://fortune.com/2019/10/04/hong-kong-protests-mask-ban-surveillance-anonymity-facial-recognition/ …
