Just a note of #ff appreciation. I find her Twitter feed to be among the most useful ones for following Hong Kong. She seems to be everywhere, or always come through with explanations and context.https://twitter.com/xinqisu/status/1178501449992400897 …

Terrible news. So far on Hong Kong island, where I am, it’s been pepper-laced blue-dye from water cannon and tear gas. Police cannot solve the political problem. Having watched the evolution of this, it doesn’t feel like protesters will be easily cowed.https://twitter.com/xinqisu/status/1178954262941843456 …

Not what a political solution for Hong Kong looks like. The government response seems to be tasking the police with clearing protesters, but the protesters are tenacious and feel legitimate. Police just came and pushed around the press, and then left. No tactical rhyme or reason.pic.twitter.com/1ZhKlface4

The police just keep throwing around teargas, and a protester was shot in the chest earlier with a live round. (Luckily, he seems to have survived). I saw a family with a small child caught in the middle of this. Meanwhile, most protesters have gas masks. Not a sane path forward.pic.twitter.com/gltTuYmSW6

Many parts of Hong Kong Island are died blue by the pepper-spray laced blue water from the water cannons. Graffiti left behind. I’m headed to Mong Kok. Still stunned at the news the police shot a protester in the chest at close range (luckily missed his heart!)

Nathan road on Kowloon side is all barricades, protesters and police lines. Hard to convey the scale.

Protesters started a fire in front of the Cheung Sha Wan Government Office. The firefighters came and put it out quickly. Like the medics, they are not impeded in their work. (They sometimes serve an intermediary function between the police and the protesters).

Still a lot going on. I was trying to step away for a minute, ended up getting teargassed. Again. At this point I’m so used to it I just held my breath and walked away. A passerby caught in it asked me to wash his eyes. The city is basically awash in tear gas.

Heh. Protesters are setting off small fireworks in line of sight of the Mong Kok police station (which is next to the Prince Edward MTR where there have been nightly protests since police closed down the station). And here comes the police line! (As I was typing).pic.twitter.com/MMNXxJWl3x

I got chased off the bench I was sitting! After 10 hours of walking and a lot of teargas, the sight of riot police charging in my direction doesn’t make me move that quickly. It’s all surreal here: a fire, raptors, a fruit stand still open. I bought some plums and sat back down.pic.twitter.com/Q3mx7c3FuZ

So after a lot of commotion, and charging, both the riot police and the raptors left. I have one plum left. And the joking or gallows humor aside, there isn’t enough police in the city to handle this many tenacious protesters. Hong Kong’s political problems are too big for this.

So, like many people in Hong Kong tonight, I was stuck on the wrong side of the water. Practically subway lines are shut down, roads blocked, taxis sparse. Some locals offered a ride. This isn’t unusual—there is a network of citizens ferrying protesters and press around.

After even some more walking, I’m back indoors! Thanks especially to all the Hong Kongers who have been very kind today, as I hung around and asked questions and walked with them. I hope the teenager who was shot at the chest by the police today recovers fully.

So what’s all this about? The Hong Kong protesters have five demands, but many of the ones I talk to say the most important one for them is universal suffrage. Hong Kongers want something seemingly as simple as electing their own government. https://twitter.com/fight4hongkong/status/1169193013173612545 …

This morning in Hong Kong, students are reported to have gathered outside the school of the high-school student shot yesterday in the chest by the police. Sending out the police to solve a political demand is, predictably, leading to a cycle of escalation.https://twitter.com/XinqiSu/status/1179181759675551744 …

The number announced as arrested yesterday in Hong Kong is now close to 200, and it appears many of these protesters (many of whom are very young) will be charged with "rioting" which carries a potential 10 year prison sentence.

So if anybody thought yesterday was the end of it. There’s a giant impromptu march that just formed, and the protesters are waving people in, people are joining and it’s quickly growing.

HongKongers can now sing their “anthem” fluently without missing a beat. They often put their hands over their hearts or hold five fingers up—for five demands, including universal suffrage. Some people are in tears. It’s the fourth month of practically non-stop protests.pic.twitter.com/phRfKSUycI

That flash rally ended at Admiralty. I got food and went back to the subway. A gaggle of youth at the entrance were empathetically waving, asking people to boycott the MTR, but not blocking. Maybe middle schoolers. It was the cutest picket line I ever saw. Anyway, I’m on a bus.

Apparently, I broke this thread. To preserve the continuity, I'm going to post the lost tweets here. (Imagine a tool that helped one use threads properly but asking for usability on Twitter is a lost cause).https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1179219111135633410 …

Back to updates. Today, two more people imprisoned for their role in the Umbrella Movement in 2014 completed their prison sentences. That movement was completely peaceful and merely demanded universal suffrage. Ended with no concessions and jailed leaders.https://twitter.com/KongTsungGan/status/1179608235487068162 …

Hong Kong may be planning to ban masks—exposing everyone including journalists to teargas. More importantly though, they may do this by invoking a very old colonial law to completely bypass legislative limits and authoritize anything they want. Barricades have gone up and the road remains blocked by protesters at Tai Koo Station. Earlier, the protesters reportedly chased of the riot police. Hong Kong is now having nightly protests. For Tai Koo context, see: https://twitter.com/xinqisu/status/1179725546759962624 …pic.twitter.com/XjeBha1yP5

It seems the Hong Kong executive will use a 98-year old colonial law to declare, in essence, a state of emergency that gives it unlimited powers, bypassing the legislative, and will kick it off with a mask ban. Remember SARS?
Masks are very common here.https://twitter.com/maryhui/status/1179991987056852992 …
