Not what a political solution for Hong Kong looks like. A lot of good analyses of the scene where a Hong Kong police shot a teenager with a live round. But the real story is this set-up where increasingly desperate protesters only face police—rather than a political path—whether they march or fight that creates these situations.

Terrible news. See upthread for the video of her being shot at by the Hong Kong police despite obvious lack of threat. (She was standing with a gaggle of journalist, no protesters among them, when the police just turned around and shot into them). https://twitter.com/jerometaylor/status/1179356794793189376 …

Hong Kong protesters are marching down Sha Tsui Road—the neighborhood where the high-school teen was shot in the chest the night before. It’s a large and growing march. Heard a new slogan today, calling for the abolishment of Hong Kong’s police department. Palpable anger. pic.twitter.com/mFCj11IkQg

It’s the second spontaneous rally in Hong Kong for me today. First was in the financial and upscale district. Well-dressed white collar workers (well, wearing the protest’s signature black) streamed out of work. This is a poorer neighborhood in the new territories. Same slogans.

Back to updates. Today, two more people imprisoned for their role in the Umbrella Movement in 2014 completed their prison sentences. That movement was completely peaceful and merely demanded universal suffrage. Ended with no concessions and jailed leaders.https://twitter.com/KongTsungGan/status/1179608235487068162 …

Very good news: Shiu Ka-chun & Raphael Wong have been released from prison after serving their 8mo sentences for the #UmbrellaMovement. Now Chan Kin-man, serving 16mo, is the only UM prisoner left. Benny Tai is out on bail pending appeal of his sentence. https://news.rthk.hk/rthk/en/component/k2/1484004-20191003.htm …

And the high school student who was shot in the chest by the Hong Kong police has been charged with “rioting” which is a potential 10 year sentence here.https://twitter.com/karenklcheung/status/1179614953596051456 …

Hong Kong may be planning to ban masks—exposing everyone including journalists to teargas. More importantly though, they may do this by invoking a very old colonial law to completely bypass legislative limits and authoritize anything they want. See thread.https://twitter.com/jerometaylor/status/1179692295580307457 …

Lots of reports Hong Kong’s gov’t is mulling a ban on face masks, four months into huge public protests. Some thoughts. To do this, they’ll probably have to invoke a colonial-era law that was last used in 1967 during the leftist riots. If they take that route it’s a Big Deal

Barricades have gone up and the road remains blocked by protesters at Tai Koo Station. Earlier, the protesters reportedly chased of the riot police. Hong Kong is now having nightly protests. For Tai Koo context, see: https://twitter.com/xinqisu/status/1179725546759962624 …pic.twitter.com/XjeBha1yP5
