Of all the possible critiques of Amazon, this one is the most toothless. Fashion is an industry built on everyone copying each other. Skechers is a brand entirely built on copying other company's shoes and selling them for less.https://twitter.com/jmj/status/1174736361783300097?s=20 …

Amazon is now straight copying Allbirds. We have reached "peak cloning" in Silicon Valley. There are no rules anymore - if you build a product that works, Amazon or Facebook will copy it. People used to care. Not anymore. pic.twitter.com/73bDMgruMX

The difference is the copier here also controls visibility/placement and has enormous personalized data on the shoppers—and thus has significant control over the market-making aspect.

How's that different than grocery private label? The Association of National Advertisers listed that as a top threat to brands in 1965.

Grocery brand label is an attempt in that path without any of the computational power Amazon has to show everyone a different shelf arrangement. Groceries have one set of shelves. Amazon has people's data AND controls what they see person by person. Is this really not obvious?

It's obvious that is a difference between Amazon and grocery stores, yes. But I'm not sure what it has to do with this particular instance. Amazon is copying a shoe. They're not doing it specifically for each user and it likely didn't take any of that computational power.

Grocery stores have powerful, albeit un-personalized techniques (Catalina couponing aside). But my main point was this particular critique of Amazon is weak. There's many things they do that can be picked apart, but copying shoes isn't one. Allbirds doesn't even sell on the site.

But they can figure out which customer is price sensitive and show them the cheap, copied shoe and not others. They can better figure out which shoes are worth copying—a lot more data. They can spot early movers and vulnerable customers in ways that would be very hard otherwise.

They have the inclinations of a big retailer, but they can anticipate and tailor more powerfully because of data and computational power—and the ability to customize screen by screen. One killer has knives the other AR-15s. We get importance of the tech difference when it's guns.

Yes, you described an on-line retailer (with some rather unfortunate rhetoric - what is a ‘vulnerable’ customer? These are shoes). But, again, you’ve not given any reason at all why Amazon copying its best sellers is any different to Walmart or Macy’s copying their best sellers

And I hate to be reductive about this, but throwing emotive buzzword (knives! Guns! Vulnerable customers!) really isn’t a substitute for explaining what, EXACTLY, is new about a retailer doing private label. No, not ‘the data’. No, it doesn’t have dominance or sale. So, what?
