People still using Facebook doesn't mean they're okay with everything because of the monopoly. I stay off it at times but it means I'm cut off from significant civic, social and community flows. Schools put active shooter updates on Facebook. How are people supposed to stay away?

It's not easy--but it's not as hard as you think it's going to be. My whole family's off Facebook: It's
#UnethicalByDesign so we simply refuse. I never had an account; my wife nuked hers YEARS ago. And you know what? Somehow we're still in touch with what matters. You can be too.1 reply 0 retweets 8 likes -

No I can’t. Neither can many. You may be able to and that’s fine. That’s like saying you can live without cars in the US. In a few places you can. Most people could never get to work. They would pay huge pricea shopping.

I think you're wrong. We're both tech Ph.D.s--connected as they come--and minus some early bumps as people got used to it, it's been completely painless. At the end of the day though, its your choice. I just wanted to let you know it's more possible than Zuck wants us to believe.

It’s not a function of me, it’s a function of what want to remain connected to. I had no other way of connecting with close relatives for example, for years. Believe me, not for lack of trying.

Again, I hear you. It's not like we didn't face the same. But we found the relationships that are important to us...were important TO THEM, TOO, and when we explained that we ethically couldn't participate in that business model, they found other ways.

P.S. That fear? THAT'S ZUCK'S PRODUCT. Right there.

By fear, you mean I should have cut off my relatives. Got it.

Simple solution, stay on FB then. But understand that life moved fine prior to its existence.

Life also moved before phones, even landlines. Life moved before writing. But they are necessary now.
