Microsoft Outlook is my unfavorite example of how monopoly effects persists for decades even when the product is crap. I'm forced to use it. When I search for the word "form" it picks one old email and TWO DELETED ones—not even the right word. Yet, Microsoft is swimming in cash.pic.twitter.com/x8gSlrKY0b

Almost all the rest of the "results" are in the deleted folder as well. Do I have a choice to search everywhere *but* the deleted folder? Of course not. I can search only inbox, or I have to search everywhere *including* deleted.🤦‍♀️Yet, Microsoft has cash coming out of its ears.pic.twitter.com/aWzxDgzK1F

Recap, Microsoft—whose products I'm forced to use at work, no choice, like perhaps hundreds of million others, if not more—has no easy way to search for an email excluding the deleted/trash folder on its mail product, but has 130+ billion cash on hand. Monopoly effects persist!

search in the file explorer is even worse. impossible to find files you only know the name but not the folder on your server in a reasonable way.

The coolest (or nastiest part) of this to me is that it is not because of the intentions of those that work at the org. No one (well most, I would think) phones it in each day. But people innovate to constraints 🤷‍♂️

Don’t discount the fact that you the user are not the customer - corporate IT is. Outlook gives them the controls they need, more driven by compliance than usability. In fact “don’t use email as a library/repository” is policy where many work due to liability risk.

This is the answer. Corp it and governance concerns drive so very much Large decisions. Has nothing to do with the features for users.

Hot take: Cortana is the new Clippy All this and more. My Surface Book is increasingly less stable after every update that pushes yet more Cortana and Microsoft cloud products.

After years of using Mac Mail because I hated Outlook so much, they are forcing us to switch everything, including our mobiles over to outlook. #NotaFan Even worse, they are making us give up our Macs this time around.

Yep, it's amazing how people think "oh, look Google managed to outrun Microsoft in search" without realizing how the 130+ billion in cash and the sky high profitability of Microsoft is due to monopoly—yep, despite what would otherwise be uncompetitive products in any real market.

Search is somehow a deprecated feature across all Microsoft products. If I try to navigate my filesystem in the directory bar on Windows Explorer and I type, for example, `Progra <Enter>`. It takes me, unbelievably, to an Edge window with Bing search for Progra Amazing.
