A real example of the predatory climate in the US. This is from @jimmyjohns and @ChipotleTweets in Raleigh. Mom thinks she is in the right place, gets out to look, five minutes later, car booted, ransom demanded and the tow truck tries to tow the car WITH THE BABY INSIDE.https://twitter.com/April89506924/status/1171817668099354624 …

In some ways, it's a small example. In another ways, this would not be allowed in a civilized country. There are many ways to deal with unauthorized parking. These predatory tow companies don't charge @jimmyjohns and @Chipotletweets because the business model is to ransom people.

I tweeted this because I know it's not rare. One minute, you step out of the car to check the building. Next minute, it's your grocery money for the week, or whatever cash you have, or your car is gone and you're stranded with your baby. If they tow, there will be more charges.🤬

It literally is hunting. They sit there all day and the moment someone steps one foot of the lot, on goes the boot. (The baby was in the car, this lady wasn't going anywhere. Just checking name of building). It's fleecing people, not parking control. https://twitter.com/mndl_nyc/status/117322440689997414 …

This would make sense! It's predatory behavior with everyone getting a cut from shaking down people. As far as I can tell, no legal controls so all one can do is publicize.https://twitter.com/BennKeezy/status/1173224365351165952 …

Honestly, it's usually not the stores but the property owners they're leasing the building from - the landlords own the lots and they get a cut from the towers

Adding an eyewitness example. Guy sits at @cholanad restaurant and literally *runs* to boot the car the moment driver steps off, looking around. The lot is easy to confuse. I don't thus patronize what otherwise looks like a great place. Do they get a cut?https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1173247648482115586 …

I've seen in it in Chapel Hill. Young woman parked (lot belonged to @cholanad but very easy to confuse as it's right next to pizza place) and as she got out to pick up her order, before we could say, "watch out!"—booted. Tears. Ransom paid. Sadly, why I don't eat at @cholanad.

Yeah but Chipotle made no effort to assist or warn when a similar thing happened to me a few years ago in Northern Virginia. My complaints to Fairfax County drew pro forma responses. I’ll do all I can to avoid eating there since.

Different city, same company. I will follow up and see if we can figure out who called in the towing company, likely in return for a cut.

Our city has this kind of predatory towing. The City undid it's regulations & deferred it's regulatory authority to the County which sets max fees but regulates little else; & fees are high eg ~$200 unhitch fee if you stop them before a tow.

I've been digging into this. Alot of times it is landlords/property managements choice. But not in this case. I will be asking the tenants to meet in person so we can all agree on what needs to be done. And take action.

example how UK dealt with the problem of rogue clampers/towng - in the end it was just banned, balanced with extended police powers to remove vehicles on behalf of landowners, and to fine vehicle owners if they don't identify the driver for parking chargeshttps://www.gov.uk/government/news/greater-rights-for-motorists …
