Blind throw of a teargas canister by Hong Kong police around a corner, first hits a reporter—yay helmet!—before teargassing random shoppers. This is one reason why the protests still have a lot momentum. Almost everyone I talked to mentioned police behavior as a key motivator. https://twitter.com/ray_slowbeat/status/1170733270079664134 …

By the way, this is why protest safety—for most people—is, in order of importance: helmets, goggles then gas mask. The most serious injuries are direct hits to the head and eyes, and I’ve seen and there a lot of videos of Hong Kong police firing the canisters at head level.

At this point, many people are quiet mad at the Hong Kong police. One could’ve made a very good study of original Cantonese insults and curses from just listening to the passerby’s yelling at them.

Also, Hong Kong's protesters appear to me as deeply earnest and non-cynical. It's really a disservice to interpret them through the cynical/weary frame around politics/movements that's common in US/UK. Our own frames/projections to their particular moment don't work well.

The "heavenly mandate" in all polities is the exclusive use of violence. It's misuse is cause for its retraction.

Are they even trying to stop the protests anymore? From what I can tell, their tactic is to get people mad at them and then arrest them while claiming they are protestors or "rioters". Then immediately they shut down MTR to try to get HKers mad at the "protestors".

In CCP's history, the communist party doesn't have methods to control crowds. An exact example is Cultural Revolution. After the CCP fired people up, the mainlanders killed each other. Unlike HK, HKers know what they should and shouldn't do.
