My working theory is they’re just responding to what’s in front of their nose. I can’t discern any strategy. Or any tactical reasoning. Or PR awareness. And when you see them up close they look sullen and tired.

Zeynep, do you have any broader observations on police fatigue? After 13 weeks of this I know I'd hate my job being a cop like this. What long-term effects on police effectiveness would this have and how would it hit recruitment and retention of officers?

Don’t mean this to excuse anything, but I saw them up close before putting on the robocop gear—they look afraid. Especially after the medic incident, there is nonstop anger at them. No way this isn’t affecting them. Looks like they snap and unload. Undisciplined release of anger.
