Zeynep, do you have any broader observations on police fatigue? After 13 weeks of this I know I'd hate my job being a cop like this. What long-term effects on police effectiveness would this have and how would it hit recruitment and retention of officers?

Don’t mean this to excuse anything, but I saw them up close before putting on the robocop gear—they look afraid. Especially after the medic incident, there is nonstop anger at them. No way this isn’t affecting them. Looks like they snap and unload. Undisciplined release of anger.

My working theory is that they are tying MTR with them, so now protestors have more anger toward this concrete target (other than a road) which they could damage its properties and inconveniencing other passengers. More bad PR on protestors, and police gaining an valuable ally.

Dunno. Running into the station batons drawn, beating up a random assortment of whomever they encounter there and pepper-spraying a crying couple crouching in a corner from a close distance in full view of many cameras seems to belie the presence of a sophisticated strategy here.
