I definitely have my "web and app activity" paused on Chrome, but it is definitely still logging my history—I can see it when I hit ctrl-H. Anyone know what obscure setting I need to find and which deity needs offerings? Can one actually turn off browsing history on Chrome or no?pic.twitter.com/YBP9tnzQRg

"web and app activity" is a Google-services-wide setting which, afaik, has no control over Chrome browsing history.

What is it actually then? It is quite misleading because what else is an ordinary person supposed to think it is? (I don't know myself?).

"If Web & App Activity is turned on, your searches and activity from other Google services are saved in your *Google Account*". what you are trying to do now is disabling your *browser* on your local PC to keep your history. someone else already mentioned you how to do that.

The method that's suggested would not work on Chromebooks (no access to the standalone history file as far as I can tell.)

oh my, if this is a Chromebook, don't expect to avoid Google sucking all metadata they can from your daily use.

Just confirming that's the case rather than expectations. :-D But it's very misleading that they have this option. They should just be upfront about what's what and what "turn off" means. A normal person would think, ah! I can turn it off.

this is similar to case some time ago about location history vs location logging or something like that. I believe that the explanation for this is different groups inside Google working on same data not coordinating an uniform UX. not malice but emergent, corporate stupidity.

I can buy that as well as not being a priority. Do you know if there was a write-up of that? I had to turn off location history three different times and always fooled that I had managed only to realize I had failed. Twice for YouTube history.
