Article by Milton Mueller/CATO makes a key claim: "social media make human interactions hypertransparent"— and most objections are just moral panics. More visibility is true but the claim that it's just a mirror, not also a shaping agent, is clearly wrong. https://www.cato.org/publications/policy-analysis/challenging-social-media-moral-panic-preserving-free-expression-under …pic.twitter.com/QT6Aw3V9di

That claim is also not true for radio, TV, telegraph, printing press, car, etc. Those also haven't just "revealed" existing human behavior: they changed the conditions under which human societies operate. That we normalize the past obviate the need for concern—either then or now.

If anything, it would have been much better if we had more deliberation back then, too. Say cars. We might not have built things the way we did and had fewer issues with sprawl, commutes, healthy neighborhoods, etc—not to mention climate change. Bring on the panic early, please.

Isn't it also: It's not just that these media have all shaped behavior, but they're actively not "transparent" or a mirror of behavior. They are performative. They change behavior themselves, before that behavior in turn changes the behavior of consumers. Or something?

They also rewarded obnoxious behavior as long as they get more eyeballs. But those rewards were arguably more transparent. Now, the only people who know about the rewards are the bad content creators and the service provider. Even the audience doesn’t get to know they r targeted
