Soooo, Facebook has special tools tracking viral misinformation damaging to itself *and* shows corrective posts to people who shared the original. I'd like a list of topics that get this special treatment. Hate speech directed at Rohingya, for example? https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-07-08/how-facebook-fought-fake-news-about-facebook …pic.twitter.com/faN9uebQQK

I'm not objecting to the method, mind you. I'm wondering if Facebook spent this much effort for an ethnic cleansing campaign helped along by its platform. People begged the company for years for better monitoring. What else gets this special treatment? How is it all decided?

The simplest, most effective way to tame Facebook is to store user data with independent data trusts. More ethical stewardship of user data+removes incentives for corporate abuses of privacy—what's not to like? See ODI studies here: http://bit.ly/2UVp0Jm

This reminds me of police abuse videos on the Facebook and Instagram feeds I see. Usually whenever there’s a video of police abuse, soon after in the feed there’ll be a video of a cop doing something that puts them in a positive light.

I find this para to be really revealing. Owning both Facebook and WhatsApp, gives an unique ability to Facebook for surveilling WhatsApp users using metadata, who operate under the assumption of secrecy.pic.twitter.com/iWTGrOUo7r

There appears to be a concerted effort to bring Facebook and other platforms under national regulatory frameworks here at the ITU Global Symposium for Regulators. Telcos, regulators and governments are all telling us that its early days yet, but the tide is turning.

What kinds of regulation? Do you hear much buzz about the kinds of recommendations put forth in the #ChristchurchCall? (Note Christchurch Call has excellent recommendations but is a voluntary model, not a regulatory model. I support regulation.)https://twitter.com/tsubtext/status/1130620515930890240 …

This news is unsurprising and unconscionable. When initiatives like those of the DCCC can be so effective using 3rd party tools it defies credulity that companies like Facebook & Twitter can't be even more effective using their own tools. We know they can.https://twitter.com/tsubtext/status/1058606189158653958 …

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, DCCC, built a system (based in part on free tools #Hoaxley and #Botometer) to identify bots deployed to discourage voting. Twitter could proactively identify and freeze malicious #PolitiBots if they wished. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-twitter-exclusive/exclusive-twitter-deletes-over-10000-accounts-that-sought-to-discourage-us-voting-idUSKCN1N72FA …

It's difficult to know what to fear more: viral misinformation and lies being peddled by charlatans, terrorists and all sorts of extremists, or the push to create a Ministry of Truth to decide what is and isn't the correct interpretation of events.
