Bad news: fixing all this requires a broad coalition whose key aim is to restore balance, equity and accountability to the democratic process and winning elections anyway under conditions that disenfranchise voters. Good news: that’s probably the only way a fix will take, anyway.https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1144249140479713280 …

Corruption, hollowed-out elections, captured regulatory processes, concentrated wealth/power... Walking back from something this deep requires significant and structural reform backed by a strong mandate. Minor fixes will quickly be undone by the same corrupting, powerful forces.

More good news is that much of what's required is not even controversial among large majorities. But can the politics be made to work? It's not easy because one main focus of all this corruption has been to undermine all the tools of such a coalition from forming.

This is also why nobody had a satisfying answer to the "what about the Senate" question in last night's debate. If all this sounds partisan, it's not completely so—this particular, structural corruption has a lot of "bipartisan" flavoring even if it is somewhat asymmetric.

A broad coalition gunning for structural corruption is a different historical beast, though, than what we have and wouldn't be straightforward to make the case for it. But the numbers and political sentiment are certainly there. Big if: strategic organization and leadership.
