Corruption, hollowed-out elections, captured regulatory processes, concentrated wealth/power... Walking back from something this deep requires significant and structural reform backed by a strong mandate. Minor fixes will quickly be undone by the same corrupting, powerful forces.

More good news is that much of what's required is not even controversial among large majorities. But can the politics be made to work? It's not easy because one main focus of all this corruption has been to undermine all the tools of such a coalition from forming.

This is also why nobody had a satisfying answer to the "what about the Senate" question in last night's debate. If all this sounds partisan, it's not completely so—this particular, structural corruption has a lot of "bipartisan" flavoring even if it is somewhat asymmetric.

A broad coalition gunning for structural corruption is a different historical beast, though, than what we have and wouldn't be straightforward to make the case for it. But the numbers and political sentiment are certainly there. Big if: strategic organization and leadership.

This isn’t to say other candidates don’t realize this but... This is a basic point. Not much else can happen unless we get a functioning and accountable government.https://twitter.com/ezralevin/status/1144429198418829312 …

Yep. Nothing else is likely happening until these are addressed. Candidates are discussing their plans for a wonderful dinner menu, but all the kitchen tools broken and cupboards bare.https://twitter.com/justadcohen/status/1144427672136642560 …

Question: What if one side wants to be able to unilaterally impose one faction's will, and one side is a coalition seeking a fair, impartial system, and — because this is what tends to happen in multipolar political systems — each side gets 50% of what they want
-
What happens is the other side makes the same reasoning, only they see themselves as the fair impartial guys because they are insane. Since both make the same reasoning, both arrive at the same strategy, and you both defect against each other. Happens all the time.

It will probably not happen absent some major underlying crisis. Still, we have to do the best we can.

Good news: The GOP has gerrymandered everything to shit already, and it's not clear how much more juice they can squeeze out of this.
