Letting a kid do anything unsupervised on the internet seems like madness to me. It’s like letting them wander around Hell’s Kitchen at 2am in 1978.

40 years ago, government regulated broadcast networks to ensure that indecent material wasn't on-air during the day.... Burden is all on parents to be 24-7 monitors of children.

Wasn’t there once a Google attempt to brand some algorithmically derived KidsTube or YouTube for kKids? I guess that failed miserably on multiple fronts.

Sounds like a bit of a sweeping generalisation based on a sample of four from a population of 100k. Is this journalism?

I've told all my parent friends to never leave them alone with it. James Bridle had an eye-opening TED talk on it & the general horrors of algorithmic learning.

I also worry about my aging ultra-conservative & conspiracy prone parents in Texas watching YouTube unsupervised.

we block YouTube in our house, but they talked me into letting them watch @COYOTEPETERSON. His show included commercial preview for the horror flick Chuckie. My daughter still has nightmares.

I don't see why this is a surprise for you... Or in what measures this is a shocking statement. My guess is they do not leave their kids watch TV unsupervised or let them play video games unsupervised either.

Algorithm are not perfect and parental supervision is necessary for a healthy media consumption. To me this statement just shows that these people are healthy parents not that Youtube is a bad thing for kid.
