2. @zeynep is right about the willful blindness of industry tech & @BostonJoan have pointed to entire field of STS - BUT i have sympathy for @tristanharris @aza cuz i see tons of confusion on several fronts between industry & academia that can possibly make even well meaning...

4. I think academia has a lot a work to do to make their research ACTIONABLE by industry - likewise I think industry has a lot of work to do to learn from academia. This is why orgs like

The problem is that they don't think of anything they don't want to do as per their own business models as interests isn't considered "ACTIONABLE" by them. It's quite "ACTIONABLE" otherwise. That's not a problem to do with needing a new field of study etc.

You’re right - it’s not abt needing a new field & they define actionable in terms of existing biz models. But I still see a humongous gulf between research and actionability. Academic leaning people think just presenting the research alone makes it actionable

There is no shortage to the amount of help and bridge-building we could do between the academy and the industry if there were willing to listen, learn and facilitate the research (their data!) and act. Misdiagnosis of the reality will waste precious effort. That's why I piped up.

I agree with this. Tho I also are with
@triciawang ; traditional academic forms like papers are necessary but not sufficient. Dudes don't get off the hook but neither do we; we have to do more than just publish3 replies 0 retweets 8 likes -

Sure. But you can put on a puppet show with Big Bird and Cookie Monster or have a musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda directed at tech companies that explains it all very nicely and it wouldn't have an impact on the power structure/incentives that determine what gets ignored and why.

Yes AND that's no reason to not try different methods to effect change. I don't dress up as Big Bird or do puppet shows (hell, I can't even sing) but I do innovate my approaches. Often I fail to change the balance of power. But I try.

I’ve given three TED talks an write for NYT and Wired etc. I do white papers, popular articles, talks, meetings, etc. It’s fine to to multi-format and public outreach. It’s important though not to be naive about reality of where leverage is and why things are the way they are.

Fully agree with that. Naivite won't help anyone. Be aware of the structures in place and don't shy away from confrontation.

Though I might add that working inside these orgs requires also techniques that enhance meta cognitive skills of those inside. Add that to the long list of things needed to make change.
