1. I’m so grateful to @tristanharris @aza being vulnerable enough to suggest a new field to study human + tech. It just goes to show there’s tons of confusion around the role of research & insights in industry - which is the topic of my upcoming talk at @MindtheProduct. https://twitter.com/tristanharris/status/1138126884330278912 …

@zeynep is right about the willful blindness of industry tech &@BostonJoan have pointed to entire field of STS - BUT i have sympathy for@tristanharris@aza cuz i see tons of confusion on several fronts between industry & academia that can possibly make even well meaning...1 reply 3 retweets 17 likesShow this thread -
3. ... tech folks feel like a new area of study is needed. One of the big problems is how research is manifested in industry under confusing fields of UX, CX, design research -as
@lifewinning noted there is def a trend with throwing an X in industry to make a field sound TOUGH3 replies 0 retweets 19 likesShow this thread -
4. I think academia has a lot a work to do to make their research ACTIONABLE by industry - likewise I think industry has a lot of work to do to learn from academia. This is why orgs like

The problem is that they don't think of anything they don't want to do as per their own business models as interests isn't considered "ACTIONABLE" by them. It's quite "ACTIONABLE" otherwise. That's not a problem to do with needing a new field of study etc.

You’re right - it’s not abt needing a new field & they define actionable in terms of existing biz models. But I still see a humongous gulf between research and actionability. Academic leaning people think just presenting the research alone makes it actionable

There is no shortage to the amount of help and bridge-building we could do between the academy and the industry if there were willing to listen, learn and facilitate the research (their data!) and act. Misdiagnosis of the reality will waste precious effort. That's why I piped up.

My god
@zeynep you & countless others MUST pipe up. I turn to you as the seer of all bullshit. We all need to fucking pipe up cuz it’s truly just a damn confusing space - I personally am overloaded by the stream of fuckery out of tech & the amazing research of STS/sociology & etc1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes
I don't mean that the academy can't do better. There is a lot of things it lacks. But what the academy needs to improve is in the absolute opposite direction of the suggestion made (new field with an X!!!! OMG). It's one of those things that's so wrong that it's not even wrong.

I really don't care abt new fields w/ "X" as I think rebranding in efforts to scale a practice is impt. This is the same critique from academics abt me rebranding qual as
#thickdata. Though the bad result of all the fields of X create more confusion, less unity. we must solve.0 replies 0 retweets 0 likesThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
