Hi @zeynep, don’t think we have formally met yet. I both admire and am inspired by your work. What I hear you saying: an incredible amount of thought & work... fields and sub-fields and sub-sub-fields... have been dedicated to grappling with technology's interaction w society.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1138479527301210112 …

The problem isn’t that we are lacking a conceptual tool kit. The problem is people emerging from the technology fields are *aggressively* ignoring the existing vast body of knowledge & existing ethnical frameworks that we can and should apply to the current situation/technology.

And when we say there is a need for a new field of “Society–Technology Interaction”, it feels like we are ignoring the foundational work of the last century across many disciplines in grappling with the deep and complex problem of how technology and societies interact.

What I think we mean: the field that is missing—as felt on the ground for those making the products—is the *unified design* field that puts it into practice: Society–Technology Interaction Design. (STxD?) STS isn't a design field, but rather a design field's underpinnings

“Ergonomcs” is the name study of the study for how to design for the ways our bodies bend and fold. “Cognetics” is the name of the study for how to design for the ways our minds bend and fold.

What is the name of the study for how to design for the ways our relationships, communities, and societies bend and fold? I don’t think there is a name for that yet.

I like it, but doesn’t feel specific enough. What about Society/Community/Relationship Interaction Design? @zephoria’s frame is ‘technosocial’. How about ‘Technosocial Interaction Design’ or just ‘Technosocial Design’? /cc @zeynep @tristanharris @tomcoates @jbrewer @faaborg

I’ve been using the word technosociology for a decade now. I didn’t coin it to invent a new field. Just as emphasis. You may borrow the term if you want. The real problem is ignoring the vast amount of existing knowledge and fields because it’s both easy and profitable to do so.

Thank you! It gets used widely. But no new name or coinage is a magic wand for what we face.

The problem with subfielding is that it's reductionist. The answer to our problems aren't smaller venns, but fields and oversight, a general introduction to human x, a general intro to earth x as requirement to x field. 1/x

For example, few techies are aware of post hoc ergo propter hoc, the illusion of cause and effect, yet techsocio is never going to grasp that aspect, socio is merely existing patterns. We need to teach techies the fundamentals, applied engineers have avoided them. How? 2/x
