AppleID accounts are free and don’t require a credit card or an apple device. The iPhone 7 is quite affordable. I really want to see Apple apply world-class engineering to the sub-$300 phone market, but there are options available.

And yet you kind of forget the two words: planned obsolescence. Phones (especially iPhones) are already getting slower after each update. My 6s is barely hanging on for example and I don't recommend buying a two or even three year old device.
