True, but it's not really failure in these cases. We're demanding more *convenience*, and then we start to expect that convenience to be the norm. Understandable, when it works fine >95% of the time. I'm a strong believer in on-prem home automation though, but it's complex.

Yeah, this was the same point I was going to make. My internet has been out for more than a week, but I can still use my nest thermostat. My smart lightbulb, OTOH, just turns on & off whenever it feels like it, & is completely useless right now. Glad I don't have more of them

Yeah, but the alternative is dumb thermostats you can’t adjust remotely, anyway. When the cloud fails, my smart device turns into the thing I replaced it with.
