Google cloud is down so people can't turn on their AC or get open their "smart" locks to let people into the house etc. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20077971 …https://twitter.com/jDantastic/status/1135282856085852160 …

Actually, this is on point. Being networked brings advantages AND risks. Plus things are very concentrated right now, which couples risks. What are our redundancies/alternatives and isolating mechanisms? Way past time for this conversation.https://twitter.com/neoengel/status/1135312253996208129 …

By the way, when I go into a house with a Google Home device, I'm cool. I just yell at it about the Youtube recommendation algorithm and how lousy the help pages are for 2FA security keys for Gmail. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I understand that. See full thread for the point about how we are coupling risks. People should look up “Seven World Trade Center is a poor choice for the site of a crucial command center for the top leadership of the City of New York.”https://twitter.com/vaishnavi/status/1135338700093530113 …

Can anyone find a Google search result that mentions the outage?

Agree. I lived for many years with a manual one, so this is no different. I never rely on it being available remotely, but I like it because I can put it on a schedule—or turn it up/down from work if I forget.

So how would we have fixed the pet example before we had devices like Nest? One outage and people act like it's a crisis.

Holy shit. Really? First world problems. In the last they'd have to go home to adjust. The infrastructure that allows wireless is down, it happens, call a neighbour if Fluffy is getting too hot. Non story.
