It's such a smart idea to connect so much of our infrastructure to single points of failure, with much of the risks coupled. Smart homes ftw.pic.twitter.com/qiD7l6RWfJ

Also, Google cloud isn't just Google properties. It's like the way AWS isn't just Amazon.https://twitter.com/chad_fullerton/status/1135273938601295873 …

Some things, yes. But people leave pets behind, counting on remote adjustment , etc. Counting on remote is one kind of risk; so much being Google/AWs is another kind of risk, and having too many "smart" apps is another kind. Coupling/concentrating risks.https://twitter.com/SureReality/status/1135313502166573056 …

Actually, this is on point. Being networked brings advantages AND risks. Plus things are very concentrated right now, which couples risks. What are our redundancies/alternatives and isolating mechanisms? Way past time for this conversation.https://twitter.com/neoengel/status/1135312253996208129 …

By the way, when I go into a house with a Google Home device, I'm cool. I just yell at it about the Youtube recommendation algorithm and how lousy the help pages are for 2FA security keys for Gmail. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I understand that. See full thread for the point about how we are coupling risks. People should look up “Seven World Trade Center is a poor choice for the site of a crucial command center for the top leadership of the City of New York.”https://twitter.com/vaishnavi/status/1135338700093530113 …

Not quite - you can still use the actual physical thermostat. You just can't use the app to control it.

That's nothing, nest protect users can't tell if their house is on fire or not

Er... they can just walk over to their thermostat and turn the AC on, just like any thermostat?

Depends. People leave behind pets counting on remote features to adjust. Google cloud is much more than Nest. See rest of thread—the point is we're coupling risks and creating single points of failure in our infrastructure (Google, AWS).
