this thread is fascinating. @zeynep contributions are SO critical. and the fact that it's taking place on twitter with its weird relationship between wealth and power is well...interestinghttps://twitter.com/benedictevans/status/1127280727475679232 …

Tech monopolies tend not to fall like Rome. They fall like Venice. They’re still there, and no-one actually invades them, but the trade routes moved, the things that gave them power and wealth stop mattering, and they become just another city, and then a backwater.

I'm afraid I remain genuinely baffled that anyone seriously argues Microsoft has retained any of its market power at all. There's just no rational basis for such an argument. It's up there with 'Amazon loses money' as a misconception

I have been forced to use Microsoft products —forced— in every job I’ve had for decades. Never seen an institution really escape it except a few (that escaped to Google products—hardly an upstart!). How is that not power?

The UK tax system runs on DEC. How much power does DEC have? You need water - does the water company control you? Microsoft has lots of customers. It doesn't set any agenda. It doesn't set standards. People don't worry what it'll do. Startups don't ask 'would Microsoft block us?'

Forced to use everyday for most functions across many jobs=power. Still though, my thesis is that monopolies like MSFT haven’t just faded away because internet/mobile as per your first tweet. World’s biggest company! Everyone I talk to hates their products. No choice.

As to my previous point - I am totally baffled by this position, and see no rational basis for it. In the previous their you cited market cap as though that was power, which I cannot comprehend. And here too - this is a really narrow definition of power.

What industry standards does Microsoft set? What leverage does it ahed over other companies? Can it control what a startup does? Do people worry what it will do? Cn it put anyone out of business? Can it charge monopoly prices? 2/3

Saying everyone you talk to hates Office may be about who you're talking to. Excel has to be one of the most loved productivity tools. Word is loved by many a writer. And I've heard of couples using PowerPoint as a tool for advocacy. Office is loved by many.
