That is indeed true, and why all this matters. Our most popular storytelling is, for the most part, confined to a very narrow lane—fiction or nonfiction, dragons or Facebook. Game of Thrones broke out for a while, before sinking back into the limited genre.https://twitter.com/AaronHertzmann/status/1129404350139326464 …

You know, if it's okay to recommend a video game, I want to recommend "Analogue: A Hate Story"/"Hate Plus"? "Hate Plus" is basically the story of a tiny society on a spaceship falling into revanchist fascism It's sort of like a novel where you can read the chapters in any order

Another "interactive fiction" video game: "A Mind Forever Voyaging". It's from 1985(!) and it's basically about being a time traveling sociologist, you travel to different time periods in one society and try to act like a photojournalist capturing moments that represent the world

Almost a caricature of what you describe, perhaps, but isn’t Asimov’s Foundation about (if not embodying) exactly this idea?
-
Same idea, yep. Can't totally say the same for rich character development there.

When I saw your question, the first title that came to mind was A Tree Grows in Brooklyn although it’s been decades since I read it! I’d have to go back and have another look.
