For @Wired, I wrote about the deeper meaning of the "right-to-repair" connected devices: we increasingly live in a tenant society without clear rights. With a nod to McLuhan, machine intelligence functions as extension of corporate and government power. https://www.wired.com/story/right-to-repair-tenants-on-our-own-devices/ …pic.twitter.com/X1nPdMNfJS

It's not that people should just go in and alter software. That's not it. But what are our rights on connected things? Now that software has eaten the world, as-is licenses, subscribe-rather-than own contracts and lack of clarity to rights and accountability has come to things.

„A decade ago, Amazon abruptly deleted copies of George Orwell's 1984 from the Kindles of its American customers. The move instantly evoked the “memory holes” in the novel's totalitarian dystopia„ https://www.wired.com/story/right-to-repair-tenants-on-our-own-devices …

Correct. The apple 1984 commercial was not a satire. 1984 was 1984 ...

One line of code erases all property rights. Suddenly you lose control of the things you own, subject to an EULA's and TOC's that effectively supercede basic ideas of ownership.

Did you know your car reports its mileage to "someone" who then shares it with others? It is next to impossible to find out the origins of the data sharing to turn it off ☹️

It gets worse. Even @Acura, in this case, doesn't know how a customer can opt out of that data sharing from the vehicle. The information on Acura's website is apparently unknown to Acura Cust Svc or Tech Support

Brilliant piece. I just had to jump through hoops at a concert when I forgot my Ticketmaster password and the whole time I'm treated like a criminal just because _they_ care more about defending against scalping (i.e., their bad process design) than the actual customer experience
