I wrote about why the downturn of storytelling in #GameofThrones also explains why it's hard for us to deal with Facebook, YouTube, AI, etc. The show was a rare beast: a sociological narrative in a world dominated by psychological/individualized ones. https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/the-real-reason-fans-hate-the-last-season-of-game-of-thrones/ …pic.twitter.com/x1b2dKZkOT

Except in the last episode, they actually did a decent job of telling the sociological story

I disagree! They had the great sociological storyline, corruption of power/war, which they almost certainly got from Martin. Then they told it via the Targaryen coin toss (genetic determinism!) and Daenerys snapping the sound of bells (too momentary/overly psychological). Ugh.

Interesting article about the two styles. I just think you misinterpreted the characters. They’re all stuck in a cycle of tyrannical power that corrupts absolutely. GoT even tells u history of tyrants and foreshadows the inevitability of the same in a system they cannot escape.

I think this is key. Many of the storylines (which you assume they got from GRRM) *could* have been told in a sociological way.

I agree. I also think they botched the “commoner” perspective. Sure, the camera was ground-level and in-close, but the humans on the ground were still just faceless, nameless to-be-corpses, with no interiority. How do nameless deaths communicate the POV of the dying?

I thought Arya's escape from King's Landing wove in a lot of sociological aspects. But would the story have been better if Daenerys had decide to sack the city because she realized Jon was her main power base in Westeros? The mad Targaryen aspect was fine given her father and bro

Or.... in addition to the coin 1) Dany lost literally everyone in her “social” circle. And 2) she was betrayed by the “society” within Westeros, as contrasted from Essos, who preferred Jon Snow over her. Good stories explain character shift with examples of nature and nurture.
