Decades of research shows job training programs don't work at scale because of lack of *supply* of appropriate good jobs. There are always nice learned-to-code stories (I'm one: started coding as a kid and it literally saved my life) but those don't scale.https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/12/us/mined-minds-west-virginia-coding.html …

I have seen many, many "teach computers to poor people" efforts over the year and studied them in my disseration. My most common observation is that they are wasting people's time and should just give people the money directly. Focus should be on living wage for realistic jobs.

I don't discount the occasional success story, and I think there are a significant number of reasonable online resources for the few people who might be inclined & actually able to take this path. It just isn't a realistic path out of poverty in places like the one in this piece.

I've seen "teach-them-code" efforts run by grifters. I've seen them them run by very well meaning people. I think there is some value in coding bootcamps, especially already well-positioned people to switch careers. It just isn't and won't ever be a way out of poverty at scale.

Meanwhile, I'm about to visit a family now homeless after the dad had an accident at work requiring surgery and time off work. That's it. Family tumbled into homelessness. Living wages plus healthcare, not false hope, is what this country needs. Look for the gofundme soon, sigh.

Oh the lack of healthcare in this country! One work injury to the dad, and this family fell into homelessness. Living out of their van. The kids are so tired at school.
Help us raise funds to get them back into regular housing and back on their feet.https://www.gofundme.com/f/1mwcyeidhc 4 replies 88 retweets 155 likesShow this thread -
Less than $2,000 to go. Yesterday, they moved out of their van (yeay!) into a temporary housing solution. We have longer term options lined up, too. Note mom is already working but still can't affort housing. We just need to get them through a few months.https://www.gofundme.com/1mwcyeidhc

Less than $700 to go for this family to pay down medical bills and secure housing—one medical accident and they became homeless.
We've a kind offer to rent to them at cost in the school district. Can we wrap this up before the kids come home from school?https://www.gofundme.com/1mwcyeidhc 2 replies 13 retweets 17 likesShow this thread -
All raised! Thank you everyone! Kids are resilient: research shows they bounce back from a brush with poverty. It's chronic poverty that crushes them. Without this boost, this family might never have had a chance. Now they will likely be fine. THANK YOU.

It was a hard decision for the family to seek help. They tried for a long time on their own but this is the way poverty traps work. An accident, medical bills, time off work, low-pay job, high housing costs in the district the kids are thriving. One small boost and they are back.

Also, I noticed lots of people donating just the right amount to round-up. I see you my kind, generous numbers people. (Last donation was a perfect $340 haha, putting us at exactly 7K). A lot of you pitched in whatever you could, thank you. Someone put in $2k, thank you.pic.twitter.com/t2g5v7USzI

Finally, thrilled that these kids saw this outpouring of kindness. They've been sleeping in a van, struggling to stay awake in school. Being taken to work with parents, no place to stay. Now, house is arranged, money is there. We'll have a celebration later this week. THANK YOU.
