Decades of research shows job training programs don't work at scale because of lack of *supply* of appropriate good jobs. There are always nice learned-to-code stories (I'm one: started coding as a kid and it literally saved my life) but those don't scale.https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/12/us/mined-minds-west-virginia-coding.html …

I don't discount the occasional success story, and I think there are a significant number of reasonable online resources for the few people who might be inclined & actually able to take this path. It just isn't a realistic path out of poverty in places like the one in this piece.

I've seen "teach-them-code" efforts run by grifters. I've seen them them run by very well meaning people. I think there is some value in coding bootcamps, especially already well-positioned people to switch careers. It just isn't and won't ever be a way out of poverty at scale.

Meanwhile, I'm about to visit a family now homeless after the dad had an accident at work requiring surgery and time off work. That's it. Family tumbled into homelessness. Living wages plus healthcare, not false hope, is what this country needs. Look for the gofundme soon, sigh.

Oh the lack of healthcare in this country! One work injury to the dad, and this family fell into homelessness. Living out of their van. The kids are so tired at school.
Help us raise funds to get them back into regular housing and back on their feet.https://www.gofundme.com/f/1mwcyeidhc Show this thread -
Also, if Dany was going to lose her mind, she could have *flown* directly to Red Keep. Can’t believe dragons flying around burning stuff became a timefiller. I recommend helping this family not live in a van anymore to help stop thinking about plot holes.https://www.gofundme.com/1mwcyeidhc

Please speak with
@zeynep about her important research@RepRoKhanna . I appreciate your efforts to bring tech jobs to underprivileged areas, but I think teaching people to program in Appalachia isn't the most scalable solution. -
Everyone in the congress and senate today should be listening intently to

Give people a living wage for a decent job and they'll have the spare time and money to upskill in whatever field strikes their fancy. Which probably won't be programming if we didn't feel the need as a society to force everyone into whatever's currently most remunerative.

Without disputing anything you're saying, what are "realistic jobs" in some areas? Apart from (perceived) job supply in programming, it can (often) be done remotely. That's rarely true of other fields.

For a lot of these people, the jobs have to be local (just move to city sounds okay but there are parents, kids, fragile support networks). There is often great infrastructure repair and care needs exactly where they are, just no pay.
