The question at hand is does capital have the right in liberal democracies to decide where people can live. This has absolutely nothing to do with authoritarian governments. That China uses capital to a huge this is an unfortunate side effect.

There has always been recognition that capitalism (where money rules) and the ideal of liberal democracies (rights + votes) are at tension. Now we have outright authoritarianism coming in through the money part to crush the rights part. That is worth noting and being alarmed.

I don’t object to that, but aren’t you more worried about what happens when the conservative billionaire class reproduces this tactic against, say, planned parenthood locations? I don’t see China being the issue as much as capital, or landlording laws.

It’s the same mechanism. It’s not an either or in terms of what to worry about. Just pointing out that autocrats and theocrats are coming through that door.
