No argument on the lack of self-criticism, but that predates the WMD thing. Mainstream media got in line over Iran-Contra, Vietnam, plenty of other stuff without losing readers. That started in 1990, with the rise of talk radio and cable news.

Revenues peaked in 2005, perhaps coincidentally just after Craigslist underwent a massive expansion, including free job listings, and into the rise of social media (which disaggregates lots of local info. That left many without core revenue, others chasing clicks.
