Guess what I can say is, do take a moment to call or visit the people in your life who were once there for you. I had a mixed relationship with mom in the end—she descended into alcoholism—but our last conversation was positive. It was a comforting thought when she suddenly died.

That story I write about, her telling everyone about being applauded at my defense—I do mean everyone. The random grocer we bought apples from would hear that story followed by her bragging about me. It was kinda embarassing and felt *very* cringey but I let her. I'm glad I did.

Also, it was not judgmental kind of bragging. She was proud of anything we did (me, other grandkids or any of the numerous students/mentees/ relatives all of whom she helped out one way or another) as long as it was apparent we had done something we wanted to do. Whatever it was.

Hearing so many grandma stories! Another: My grandma’s husband drank/gambled away their house, while it was being built. She gathered the money again, told the builder: “If you go bankrupt, fine. If you let my husband sell it again, I will haunt you.” She got the house and deed.

I just want to thank everyone again for reaching out to share with me their own grandmother/special-adult-in-their-life stories. So many from Turkey similar to mine from my own grandmother's generation, but versions of it all over the world... All so deeply touching. Thank you.

Ugh, I just noticed that many, many of the very kind emails people sent me after my grandmother's passing ended up in the .. spam folder. Adding check your spam folder to my todo list. Just wanted to say thank you again, even if I have not yet responded.
