When @netflix chose to release and promote a show about a teen who committed suicide, experts warned that it could to cause an increase in suicides especially among adolescents. Now, research finds that's exactly what happened. https://www.nimh.nih.gov/news/science-news/2019/release-of-13-reasons-why-associated-with-increase-in-youth-suicide-rates.shtml …pic.twitter.com/me1QMTDxSt

Did I wake up in a magical world in which correlation equals causation or is one being irresponsible in promoting a "quasi-experimental" study that openly admits it has no concrete evidence for its assertions thus doing the thing one often critiques?pic.twitter.com/QrXW9BknEy

They cannot "rule out" because it is not a true experiment (never possible with human societes) but it's a great study design and fits very well with everything we know. Researchers are careful always to point out what's not a true experiment. It *is* strong evidence.

I'd be interested in hearing how it is strong evidence with zero data on if the subjects had even heard of 13 reasons. For example, what was the ethnicity, income bracker and orientation of these suicides? And again, what else was going on?https://thinkprogress.org/suicide-contagion-election-e8f2bc2c09c6/ …

You stated "that's exactly what happened" and the study is explicitly states it is not exact. "Cannot make a casual link" and "cannot rule out" does not mean "exactly what happened".pic.twitter.com/4CLKZP6jrL

If it were the very first study of its kind with no plausible mechanism, one would be more cautious. When we have decades and decades of research, a well-studied and thoroughly documented mechanism, and the latest finding tracks with all that. Comfortable with my wording.

I still question this. The connection of suicide contagion with fiction vs other factors is less definitive, which is why the NIH wording was so cautious and it's worth asking what other factors were present besides the show. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/13-reasons-why-and-suicide-contagion1/ …

And researchers said "Contrary to expectations, these associations were restricted to boys" which seems like a reductive narrative may be missing other key factors, especially as prior coverage saw a threat to both genders or girls.

The difference in boys may well be related to method (aka guns) rather than attempts--something else we know from extensive literature: there are gendered differences in methods and fatality rates differ significantly between methods. Something to further probe for sure.

I see condemnation of the show but no suggested solution. Should coverage of suicide be restricted? In Belgium, where I live, the media downplays suicide. It’s a taboo subject, and yet we have one of highest suicide rates in the world. Silence will not make this go away.

I totally agree silence isn’t the answer. It’s this particular narrative that’s so damaging—posthumous vindication/voice. Just the worst message to a young person struggling with suicidal ideation.
