Look, school shootings and suicides and terrorism/mass killings are mediated partially through media exposure/contagion and how we handle them—on mass media, social media, all of it. The evidence has piled up. Need to develop and follow sensible guidelines.

Hi "correlation is not causation" people in my mentions. That's not where science stops! Correlation is not causation except when it is. Correlation is the bedrock of causation. Researchers go to great lengths to identify confounders. PLUS this tracks with ton of other research.

I don’t think this study is claiming that the show bears responsibility. It’s providing evidence of correlation and association. In other words, teenagers who were already at risk of suicide were affected by the media they consumed - just as teenagers usually are.

Did I wake up in a magical world in which correlation equals causation or is one being irresponsible in promoting a "quasi-experimental" study that openly admits it has no concrete evidence for its assertions thus doing the thing one often critiques?pic.twitter.com/QrXW9BknEy

This study does not provide such essential evidence such as these suicides citing the show as a motive or even that the subjects saw the show. It's more an example of how moral panic confirmation bias can seep into allegedly rigorous fields.

My immediate guess is guns—a more fatal method, more common to boys. Attempts may well have increased among both boys and girls, but a higher rate of fatal outcomes among boys. (This tracks with previous research on this).
