So my (very capable!) IT team at work has kinda forced me to replace my desktop (7 years old, end of lifecycle by policy). I get their reasoning for the policy but it was working just fine as far as I'm concerned! Does your workplace have an end-of-life age for desktops?

So just chatted with someone from the IT team and he says that many big vendors have proprietary parts—power supplies, for example, with non-standard pinouts—and then charge an arm-and-a-leg to replace them on older models, effectively forcing an upgrade.

Sometimes the issues are subtle. Pages could import AppleWorks files for a while, but eventually the feature was removed. I knew a guy whose old Mac lasted too long — by the time it died, his files were unreadable by current software.
