For @Wired, I wrote about the tyranny of our friendly, helpful, ubiquitous overlords: the recommendation algorithms that nudge us on what to buy, watch or read. Like many other things, there are issues when they work and issues when they fail or are gamed. https://www.wired.com/story/how-recommendation-algorithms-run-the-world/ …pic.twitter.com/2E1y9CD4SJ

I have fun imagining recommendation algorithms figuring out I’m talking about them and ignoring my article. 😬 (See also: make better, as one can’t meaningfully opt-out).

The tech corps' narrative is that they are just trying to give you what you want. No, they are *recommending* things and they should be accountable for what they recommend.

Another great piece by @zeynep … when I worked at Amazon, mgmt advocated a “hands off the wheel” approach to all pricing and editorial content. Time to get our hands back on the wheel.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1120651576614563841 …

Would it be technically possible to organize things so one had control over one's own data, and could (selectively) launch it into the ether, as it were, to generate recommendations? (And by the same token could withhold it when one prefers an unmediated "experience"?)
