“There is no longer such a thing as individually ‘opting out’ of our privacy-compromised world”. My latest for the @nytimes on how data on billions of *other* people plus computational methods applied to your data crumbs made opting out mostly an illusion. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/21/opinion/computational-inference.html …pic.twitter.com/gqECYxBAec

Whenever I talk about privacy, someone says. "Don't say anything online you don't want known to them." It's even a comment to my NYT piece. But the whole point is even that is no longer protective. They will get you: indirectly and from your network. Need a collective approach.pic.twitter.com/85ZULKMQLL

Yes! This is why data protection laws are *not the only policy tool* we need: @zeynep “We also need to start passing laws that directly regulate the use of computational inference: What will we allow to be inferred, and under what conditions?” https://nyti.ms/2vfSAyT

Absolutely, no-one has ever said, I've never written anything in a letter or said anything in a phone call that I wouldn't want to be public knowledge.

this probably won't work either. i have (in the back of my mind) resigned myself to the near-future need for adversarial approaches i.e. distorting/disrupting the data that is available about me, or something like that.

Only Europe is where privacy can be found in the modern world. Nobody knows anything about reality there. 🙈😂

Haven't logged in to FB in a long time. No FB cookies in my browser, no FB app on my phone. Was listening to Indian classical music on Amazon, in my car etc last week. 2 days ago, got this email from FB. 😱pic.twitter.com/7eJBhqKXsu

I remember John C Dvorak made the point he never had a Facebook account, but he has a profile cobbled together from other people posting and mentioning his name. Even posting pictures with him so Facebook has the data...thats just one company.

Same as saying "Don't bother speaking about anything that interests you". If I accept self-censorship bc I am spied on, I have accepted a loss of my political power. I don't.
