The government of Sri Lanka has finally shut down Facebook and WhatsApp after the company did nothing to stop their platforms transforming into weapons of hate and violence. Oh come on. This is Sri Lanka, an actual country with a real & complex history. Little reason to think FB is key driver of polarization. Meanwhile, a lot of censorship and top-down hate speech. All this is too important to use as generic projection about Facebook or social media.
