People in Silicon Valley may have given little thought to Sri Lanka’s recent past and the civil war that ended recently into a fragile situation. There really is no room for complacency here. Myanmar is small compared to the terrible potential path here we’d all like to avoid.

Amplifying. Right now, both international media and tech companies are part of Sri Lanka’s information ecology. The stakes are high.https://twitter.com/sanjanah/status/1119965375980916737 …

By the way, I’m finalizing these hires this week. Last call. These thorny issues is exactly what we will be working on.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1116427711881330689 …

Umm, projecting our US-UK-EU specific Facebook worries onto Sri Lanka would be a major disservice to an actual country facing a deep challenge. Please don't. Sri Lanka has a deeply censored mass media and people rely on social media for information. World is complicated.

Big tech and international mass media is part of Sri Lanka's information ecology and that comes with responsibilities—pointing out the complexity doesn't absolve them. But it's just not a simple case of social media bad, rest okay. PLEASE RESPECT THE COMPLEXITY. Much is at stake.

For example, read this thread. This isn’t time for knee-jerk “Facebook bad” analyses. Obviously, neither is it all great. The details matter greatly.https://twitter.com/meghara/status/1120312486341808128 …

Thanks Zeynep. Have been working on this, and saying this, since 2014. As have so many others from
#srilanka. But perhaps it takes a tweet from your account for our work, output, experience, observations, research, insight & expertise to be channeled. One is grateful. -
I know! I follow. Let me know what I can amplify. Long story, I’ve a lot of interest in the country and its information ecology. I normally don’t tweet about places where I don’t feel am the best voice. Just had to say all that given the unfortunate turn.

What should media be doing and saying in a vacuum of government information? And how should the government be filling that vacuum? You can't say "do nothing," because you can't shut down what people think by shutting down social media.
Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Sri Lanka media is filled with images of carnage on a regular basis, it clearly is part of Lanka’s (dysfunctional) political culture. Sensitivity is always good, but local media is no model.

No good models is where we are, mostly.
