I just noticed that Lyft will allow me to schedule a ride that's more than 150 miles long! Could be three hours. Can the driver see what they are getting into before hitting accept? Otherwise seems ... terrible, to end up hours away from your home, no notice.

This is true for Lyft, but I bet Uber has same policy. No extra cash for driver, just the substantial amount that would come from that trip. Plus, I would hope, a healthy tip from the rider who booked that highly unusual trip.

I talked to an Uber Black driver once who claimed to have driven a passenger to the Canadian border. From Oakland.

I talked to an Uber driver who took a passenger from Pittsburgh to Cleveland and a Lyft driver who took a passenger from Pittsburgh to Morgantown. The Lyft driver said she wouldn’t do it again, felt very unsafe, now calls her riders and asks where they are headed before pickup.

I’ve also had drivers call to ask where I’m headed and cancel if it isn’t worth it (very short trip), so I guess it can go the other way too. I think Uber/Lyft have disincentivized that lately though.

I've taken a 3+ hour taxi across international borders. The driver had to drop his gun off at home before we set off. Weirdest part was the end. He had to go back all the way. I was at my hotel. I almost wanted to invite him in for awhile.

Took an Uber from LAX to San Diego one time (rental car arrangement fell through). I got the impression the driver was not aware up front. I tipped generously...

Last I checked, there is a maximum ride length of 100 miles or $500. Anything exceeding that is uncompensated.

Maybe it’s changed, but I’ve had Uber drivers tell me previously that they were blindsided by long trips like NYC to Hartford. I would hope they have a way to decline those without penalty, especially if they have a child care issue or other considerations.
