The key to the story is the single angle-of-attack sensor. Aviation, like any safety culture, normally emphasizes backups and redundancies. Sure. Note however that a plane that is side-slipping can have very different readings on correctly functioning AoA sensors. This can make "sensor agreement" hard to program and lead to other unexpected behaviour.
