The key to the story is the single angle-of-attack sensor. Aviation, like any safety culture, normally emphasizes backups and redundancies. Flawed/broken sensors aren't unusual. Permitting any sensor to override flight controls so dramatically probably is. The design flaw is what caused the crashes.
