most of academic Twitter I follow is supportive and informative. Academia as a profession has its share of pettiness and politics but what job doesn’t?

Yes! That's why it's so important to open the ranks to first-gen folks, and others from less-privileged backgrounds. I'd also support sabbaticals and rotations outside of academia, etc. It's an immense privilege and opportunity to be able to go deep, but can create blind spots.

I'm often surprised how many of my colleagues have academic parents! More distortion. I have this conversation a lot with other first-gen, immigrant and/or corporate-escapee colleagues. Sure, there are issues but can you believe our luck compared to what we know of the world?

I think teaching professional students makes me realize how great we have it. Their job politics and employment stability is often much worse.
