Latest phishing: your "dean" emails (except it's their email at gmail dot com) asking for @Google play gift cards—and to scratch off pin and send a picture. Question: are such gift cards truly untraceable? Asking for someone who's emailing back and forth with the scammer atm.😬

At first I thought it was automated, but no they are responding in real time! (Hi! If you're reading this. Sorry you're in a meeting and in urgent need of gift cards! I'll do my best to buy them all). I know gift cards are a way to launder but was wondering why Google?

It's phishing/scam in real time so I'm just wondering how profitable/untraceable Google gift cards are. (Right now, "my dean" is trying to convince me not to drop them by in whatever meeting he's stuck at!) Also, fascinating, they wanted $700 worth. Less would've been easier, no?pic.twitter.com/ho3j4H7dNi

$700 is actually on the low side for these types of scams. Usually, they’re in the $1,000-$2,000 range.

Anyone who would buy $700 worth of anything without texting or talking would do the same with a 2k sized request. If you're a scammer and you lucked out on someone who is falling for your schtick, might as well make it worthwhile.

Yeah, I'm wondering if they have such calculations. I know about some previous research on this, but I'm usually skeptical that scammers do that much strategizing. Then again, it's an evolutionary game so doesn't have to be all thought out.

It's probably a matter of the type of scam. Long cons will tend to start small and gradually demand bigger amounts. The sort of scam you mentioned here is by definition a one off as you'll always know you got burnt when you eventually meet said boss or colleague.
