Latest phishing: your "dean" emails (except it's their email at gmail dot com) asking for @Google play gift cards—and to scratch off pin and send a picture. Question: are such gift cards truly untraceable? Asking for someone who's emailing back and forth with the scammer atm.
Yeah, I'm wondering if they have such calculations. I know about some previous research on this, but I'm usually skeptical that scammers do that much strategizing. Then again, it's an evolutionary game so doesn't have to be all thought out.

It's probably a matter of the type of scam. Long cons will tend to start small and gradually demand bigger amounts. The sort of scam you mentioned here is by definition a one off as you'll always know you got burnt when you eventually meet said boss or colleague.
