Latest phishing: your "dean" emails (except it's their email at gmail dot com) asking for @Google play gift cards—and to scratch off pin and send a picture. Question: are such gift cards truly untraceable? Asking for someone who's emailing back and forth with the scammer atm.
Who the heck buys 2k worth of cards for boss without texting or talking???

Shockingly, it happens more often than you’d think. The ROI must be good or else the frequency of these types of attacks wouldn’t be increasing so dramatically!

Anyone who would buy $700 worth of anything without texting or talking would do the same with a 2k sized request. If you're a scammer and you lucked out on someone who is falling for your schtick, might as well make it worthwhile.

Yeah, I'm wondering if they have such calculations. I know about some previous research on this, but I'm usually skeptical that scammers do that much strategizing. Then again, it's an evolutionary game so doesn't have to be all thought out.
