Latest phishing: your "dean" emails (except it's their email at gmail dot com) asking for @Google play gift cards—and to scratch off pin and send a picture. Question: are such gift cards truly untraceable? Asking for someone who's emailing back and forth with the scammer atm.

LOL update, I meant to email my dean and Outlook autocompleted the spammers email since I had emailed back and forth with them hahaha. Yes, I accidentally sent it. I hope they send me back proper feedback on my plan!

This scam has been popping up where culprits have figured out boss’s name often includes them first hacking into the email server so the domain is the employer’s. “Boss” says they’re planning a surprise so keep it quiet

$700 is actually on the low side for these types of scams. Usually, they’re in the $1,000-$2,000 range.

Phone scammers have been targeting CMU international students. They spoof real numbers, say they are from some three-letter agency, and the visa will be revoked if they don't go to Walgreens and buy hundreds of dollars of gift cards, scratch them off, and read out over phone.

At least in one instance, this was $500 in Google play cards.
